Clinical Psychology
Clinical psychologists aim to reduce psychological distress and to enhance and promote psychological well being. Clinical psychologists work with people experiencing mental or physical health problems which may include; anxiety and depression, serious and enduring mental illness, adjustment to physical illness, neurological disorders, addictive behaviour, behaviour disabilities and relationship problems. A variety of methods may be used in the application of clinical psychology, including psychometric tests, interviews and direct observation of behaviour. From assessment, course of therapy can then be decided.

Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is essentially a “talking treatment” in which the client talks with their therapist to help overcome issues including; stress, emotional problems, relationship problems and troublesome habits. The client is recognised as an active participant in their treatment progress, and both client and therapist work together to address the client’s thought processes, feelings and behaviour; to understand inner conflicts, and find new ways to deal with, and alleviate distress.

There are many different modalities of psychotherapy, and sub-groups within these modalities. Psychotherapists undertake training spanning a different number of modalities which can then be combined in practice to effectively treat the individual client and the nature of their problem.
